The research project on The Evolution of the South African State sets out to understand the historical evolution of the South African state and the impact of this on the inherited state in 1994 as well as the transformation efforts that have been undertaken since 1994. The project will also provide forward-looking insights into possible trajectories for the more effective transformation of the state and its utilisation as an instrument of social transformation. 

The research project on The Evolution of the South African State was finalised was finalised in September 2013 and the findings were published as a research report entitled Essays on the Evolution of the Post-Apartheid State: Legacies, Reforms and Prospects.
