In issue Number #6 we provide a report on a joint conference, hosted by MISTRA and The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), entitled “Towards Rio+10: Sustainable Development and The Role of the State” held in Cape Town. We also provide a report following the conference outlining its implications in South Africa and globally, by Sarraounia Samuels, as well as the full text of Minister Trevor Manuel’s Key Note address, and an interview by Fazila Farouk, executive director of The South African Civil Society Information Service (SACSIS) with Joel Netshitenzhe, MISTRA’s Executive Director on the role of government in sustainable development.

In MISTRA Monthly Briefin#5 we provide the full text of the MISTRA Inaugural Annual Lecture presented by Prof Thandika Mkandawire, and a brief report on the MISTRA skaftin (brown bag session) with Prof Mkandawire. The skaftin session provided an opportunity for people who were unable to attend our Inaugural Annual Lecture - as well as those who had attended - but who had not had an opportunity to engage with him, to have a more in-depth interaction on the topic of the role of social compacts.
