STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF AHMED KATHRADA

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection
(MISTRA) joins with family, colleagues, friends and all South Africans as we
mourn the passing of struggle stalwart, ANC veteran and MISTRA
partner, Ahmed Kathrada. Today, as the nation mourns an icon who dedicated
his life to the liberation struggle in South Africa, we recall the countless
ways in which Ahmed Kathrada inspired and transformed our lives.
MISTRA is proud to have worked alongside the Ahmed
Kathrada Foundation (AKF) on issues of nation-formation and social cohesion,
including in the Anti-Racism Network (ARNSA) that was convened by the
foundation in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Foundation
for Human Rights and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. We
are also proud to have partnered on the Roundtable on Whiteness, which aimed to
address post-Apartheid legacies,
privileges and burdens.
In honour of the
living memory of Ahmed Kathrada, MISTRA will continue to work with the AKF,
along with other partners, in providing platforms for stakeholders to reflect on
strategic issues facing South Africa and indeed all humanity. We pledge to honour Uncle Kathy’s legacy and vision of deepening
non-racialism and promoting all generations of human rights enshrined in our
