    Mapungubwe Annual Lecture 2017

    The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), hosted former deputy minister of Finance, Mcebisi Jonas, for the Mapungubwe Annual Lecture 2017 on Tuesday, 16 May 2017, at the University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus.
    The theme of his lecture was: Radical Economic Transformation: Are Fiscal and Monetary Authorities a Help or a Hindrance?
    Some of the themes of his lecture explored:
    • The meaning of radical economic transformation and how it relates to the structure of the South African economy, including the balance among various sectors,
    • Ownership patterns in the economy and their inter-relationship with issues of race, class and gender as well as local community participation,
    • The role of fiscal authorities in economic growth and development, including the dynamic of post-tax redistribution,Monetary policy and its facilitative or constraining role in economic transformation,
    • The place of pre-tax interventions including an income policy pertaining to enterprise income differentials and the issue of a minimum wage, and;
    • The relationship between economic growth and inclusivity and whether these can be mutually supportive.
