Strategic Reflections


MISTRA’s Strategic Reflections comprise research and a range of events that include seminars, lectures, informal ‘brown bag’ discussions, all aimed at adding value to public discourse and to incubate new ideas.

The Institute conducts regular open and closed dialogues, facilitated key retreats and strategic roundtables.  These include a workshop that brought together the Statistician General, academics, economists, and analysts to debate the country’s highly-contested employment statistics.

With the University of Johannesburg, MISTRA hosted US cosmonaut Greg Olsen in a roundtable on the relevance of space exploration and scientific research for Africa and developing countries.

In partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand, MISTRA hosted internationally-renowned author Professor Richard Wilkinson (co-author of Spirit Level) in a Skype conference on the impact of inequality and a series of roundtables on issues such as the role of NGOs and civil society. With the South African Reserve Bank, MISTRA hosted ‘Blue Economy’ specialist Prof Gunter Pauli.
