Cyril Ramaphosa of the Shanduka Group hosted a networking dinner to introduce the Mapungubwe Institute to the business community at Summer Place in Sandton on 7th June 2010. The dinner was attended by over 80 South African business leaders.
The dinner was preceded by an informal meeting of the members-designate of the Institute’s Council of Advisors and Board of Governors. The Chairperson of the Interim Board of the Institute, Sibusiso Vil-Nkomo, and Executive Director, Joel Netshitenzhe, briefed the meeting on progress with the establishment of the Institute and the formal establishment of the Council and the Board.
At the dinner that followed Sibusiso Vil-Nkomo welcomed the guests and provided insight into the vision that led to the birth of the Mapungubwe Institute.
Minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale, gave the keynote address on The Role of the ‘Think Industry’ in the Advancement of Nations. He described the FIFA 2010 World Cup, which was about to commence, as an idea – like that of the Institute – whose time had come. He said that ‘it stands to reason that the concretisation of ideas is what propels the forward movement of persons,
communities, nations and peoples in the global society’. He said further that ‘there is no doubt that…there is ample space for the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection…to unlock the mysteries of the unknown towards the known.’ He ended with a caution: ‘The best safeguard should be reliance upon the scientific method no matter how unpalatable the results rather than subsume science to expediency.’
